Under the auspices of Diabscreen Kerala and The Government Press Welfare Society Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev conducted a free medical camp on 28th December 2006, at the premises of Government Press, Thiruvananthapuram. This is the 276th camp of its kind. Sri.S.Manilal, Press Superintendent of Government Press in Kerala inaugurated Diabetes detection and awareness camp. Sri S.Basheer Kunju, Deputy Superintendent presided over the function. Dr.Jothydev conducted a 2 hour long interaction health awareness speech. Muraleedharan Nair welcomed the gathering and Mohanachandran offered vote of thanks.

Height, weight, waist circumference, Blood pressure, fasting sugar, cholesterol etc., were measured for all the employees free of cost.

Question: From what we have read from various newspapers and internet most of the new medicines and the new investigations in diabetes are affordable only by the rich.Does it mean that the poor patients with diabetes will have to suffer from pain, blindness, amputations etc?

This question is now raised in all global forums. In every country, developed or developing, disparity in health care delivery is posing major concerns. International Diabetes Federation has brought out treatment guidelines based on available resources. There are at present three levels of care based on this. I also agree that at present the poor is finding it almost impossible to go for preventive diabetes health care. We are also trying our level best in our Research Centre to find out cheaper methods of preventive diabetes health care delivery to bring down the incredible increase in treatment expenses due to diabetes complications.
